Meissen Cosmopolitan Collection
Appointed personal alchemist to Augustus the Strong, Johann Friderich Bottger spent several years at court but was never able to provide the gold required by the Hector of Saxony. Instead, thanks to his efforts, he discovered the formula for making porcelain, which at that time was worth almost more than gold.
In the "Gold" decoration of the Meissen Cosmopolitan collection, porcelain is polished with truly opulent stripes of the precious metal. For this purpose, Meissen's specialized painters use burnished precious gold, which is opaque immediately after leaving the kiln. The decoration receives its characteristic luster through polishing with a sharp semi-precious stone, an agate stylet.
The coordinating designs in "Mesh gold" offer a subtle counterpoint to these sumptuous pieces
