They improve the mood and are full of magic: that is why we like cakes and pastries so much.
"Just a little bit of sugar and the pill goes down" sang Mary Poppins to the children who didn't want to tidy up their room: it means how a sweet treat can cheer up a negative mood, even if only for a short time.
Research has shown that food not only serves to nourish us, but also to comfort us. Especially if it is palatable and quick to consume, such as a biscuit, a square of chocolate, etc.
Comfort Food
Sweets are considered by Anglo-Saxons as comfort food, i.e. a brief consolation from daily stress, boredom and anxiety.
But why do sweets make us feel better? The comforting capacity of sweets depends on certain substances contained in them such as proteins that act on neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins that have a benign effect on mood.
Of course, comfort food should be eaten in small doses as part of a proper eating style.
